What is a Spring Roll?

Spring rolls are a Vietnamese dish. Spring rolls are also called summer rolls, salad rolls, and rice paper rolls. It traditionally consists of pork, shrimp, vegetables, and rice noodles. Many of these ingredients can be substituted to your preference. Spring rolls can be dipped in a peanut sauce, hoisin sauce, and Vietnamese nuoc cham. They can be served as an appetizer, a side dish, and as an on the go snack or a party favor.

Ingredients: 

  • Rice paper

  • Vermicelli Rice Noodles

  • Cucumber 

  • Lettuce

  • Shrimp

  • Cilantro


How to Make Spring Rolls

  1. In a pot of water, cook the vermicelli rice noodles until soft.

  2. Strain the noodles and wash with cold water.

  3. Then strain again.

  4. Get a bowl with warm water inside.

  5. Dip the rice paper in the bowl for 3 seconds but do not soak.

  6. Lay the rice paper down. 

  7. Place the lettuce ⅓  to the bottom then followed by the cucumber, cilantro, noodles, and shrimp. 

  8. Grab the bottom and begin to fold and roll the rice paper over the stuffing.

  9. Roll 2 times over the stuffing.

  10. Take the left side and fold over.

  11. Take the right side and fold over.

  12. Roll till the end of the rice paper.

  13. You have a spring roll.

 Hoisin Dipping Sauce Ingredients

  • ½ cup of hoisin sauce

  • 4 teaspoons of water

  • 4 teaspoons sugar 

  • 4 teaspoons of lime juice

  • 1 tablespoon of crushed peanuts

How to Make Hoisin Dipping Sauce

  1. In a bowl mix all ingredients except water. 

  2. After it’s mixed slowly add 1 teaspoon of water at a time.

  3. Add until your desired consistency.

  4. You have hoisin dipping sauce. 


How to Store Spring Rolls

  • You can cover them with a clean, wet dish towel

  • Individually wrap them in plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to two days
